12 real-time stations added by the Brazilian Coastal Monitoring System (SiMCosta)

Added on 2025-09-30 21:29:59 by Ella Soares Pereira
The Brazilian Coastal Monitoring System (SiMCosta) aims to establish and maintain an observation network composed of fixed and floating platforms equipped with sensors to monitor essential meteorological and oceanographic variables in coastal zones, providing valuable information on the impacts of climate change along the Brazilian coast.
In the context of sea level rise, as highlighted by the IPCC, SiMCosta has already deployed 12 meteo-tide gauge stations along the country’s coastline. By 2026, an additional six stations are expected to be installed in the Northern and Northeastern regions, further expanding national coverage.

With the support of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), these stations are being integrated into the High-Precision Altimetric Network (RAAP) of the Brazilian Geodetic System (SGB), ensuring greater reliability and accuracy in sea level monitoring data.

Furthermore, SiMCosta collaborates with the international IOC Sea Level Monitoring Facility (SLSMF), strengthening the global sea level observation network. In this way, the data collected support scientific research, disaster prevention, and sustainable coastal management.
